How-to ground yourself in the midst of chaos

To make sense of what you were feeling, we can use Laban Movement Analysis, used a lot in movement therapy, to understand what each axis means.

The breathing exercise in 3 dimensions leads to harmony and alignment when it all comes together. Harmony feels like flow and ease. You might get there right away, or you might need a lot of practice to get there. Wherever you are, whatever your starting point is, it’s perfect.

Here is what the different directions mean:

  • Height = weight, gravity, hierarchy, pride, self-worth, and being.
  • Width = perspective, interpersonal connection, empathy, space.
  • Depth = Doing! Considered a male dimension (changing in the 21st century). In some cultures – women – waiting, not going and doing, holding back.
During the exercise please pay attention to what you feel in each axis, and this explanation above will give you insights into what it all means. Jot down when you are done which axis felt comfortable and which one did not. Notice if there is a difference between the upper and lower body, or the right and left sides. Add all of this incredible wisdom your body is sharing with you to your journal.

For example, if you are uncomfortable with the width axis it means that there is something that needs processing in the realm of perspective, interpersonal connection, empathy, and space. Normally, when you struggle with the depth axis, and you are comfortable with the front and not with the back, it means you are comfortable with your masculine energy but not with your feminine energy. Both men and women possess masculine and feminine energies. Traditionally, the “doing” is considered masculine energy and the “being” is considered feminine energy.

Explore and learn to pay attention to the subtleties.
